Tips for Success

One of the most used phrases in Job hunting and also one of the most underutilized by job-seekers is Dress for Success. In Job-hunting, first impressions are critical. Remember, you are marketing or selling yourself to a potential employer, and the first thing the employer sees when greeting you is how you are dressed. You must make every effort to have the proper dress for the type of job you are seeking. Will dressing properly get you the job? Of course not, but it will give you a competitive edge and a positive first impression.

Get a good night’s sleep. If your interview is early morning, get up early enough to go over your questions and company information before going to the interview.

Resume Tips

  1. Keep your resume to one or two pages in length.
  2. Always start with your most recent employment and work backwards; same with your education
  3. Begin your sentences with action verbs for added punch and to express a sense of accomplishment.
  4. Be specific use numbers, percentages, figures and facts. Example: "Exceeded sales quotas by 25% within 1 year."
  5. Rather than simply listing your duties or responsibilities, focus on accomplishments and show how you have gone over and above the requirements of the position itself.
  6. Always include the technical environment with each position.
  7. Include hobbies and interests.
  8. It is not enough to run the word processor's spell checker on your document. Proofread your resume at least 3 times.
  9. Have references available on a separate page.
  10. Include your name on the top each page of the resume.

Interview Tips

  1. Allow enough time to get to the interview 10 -15 minutes early.  Plan to expect things like traffic congestion. If you plan for it, you’ll be on time.
  2. Have proper directions, company address and telephone number and consultant’s telephone number with you.
  3. Be sure to research the company and the position that you are interviewing for. Practice going over questions and answers with a peer.
  4. Bring a notebook, pen, and extra copies of your resume. Having a notebook will allow you to write down information you may need to refer back to after the interview.
  5. You want to dress professionally even if they dress business casual. Men should wear a dark suit with a light colored shirt and conservative tie. Women should wear a dark suit and jewelry in moderation. Make sure your suit is clean and pressed as well.
  6. Always remember - maintain good eye contact, smile and show your enthusiasm, and be positive about yourself and your previous employers.
  7. Know your resume so your delivery is short and to the point.
  8. Show your interest in the position you interviewing for and close out with why you are qualified for the position.
  9. Never talk money.

Questions to Ask

  • What will be my first project?
  • In which areas do you expect me to develop new expertise?
  • How do you envision my growth in responsibilities?
  • What problem areas do you have?
  • Why is this position open?
  • What types of people typically succeed this department?
  • Avoid questions about benefits, salary and financial issues. While important, terms can be handled later after the company has seen what you have to offer.
  • Make a list the night before; do not rely on your memory. The stress of the interview may cause you to forget key questions.
